Our state is one of many that mandates a Senior Project.
For those of you that don't know, it's basically a large project for the community that is related to your career. It is designed to help you a) see if you actually like doing what you want to do and b) get you started in work after graduation.
My project was to do design a fully operational website for the Wendell Recreation District. This organization manages the town's pool, parks, and youth sports (3rd through 6th grade). They didn't have a website so I offered to make one for them for my project.
After a long year of work, that website is finished! I uploaded it to the domain only minutes ago.
If you want to see my first ever official website for a client, the web address is wendellrec.org
The group was incredibly happy with the site. And they should be too, they're getting a professionally made website that's worth about $400 for free.
I'll be staying employed by Wendell Rec as their Website Manager, making $30 a month in exchange for minor edits and updates.
And if that wasn't good enough, guess what happened earlier today?
I'm in BPA (Business Professionals of America). About a month ago, 10 of the 12 contestants from our school qualified for the State competition that's happening in two weeks. We went to Wendell's Chamber of Commerce meeting in hopes to attract attention to our Labor Auction we are running for a fundraiser (State Competition isnt cheap). Instead, the Commerce president said she'd actually help as far even directly donating to BPA! It was mainly because how successful we did and we chose the best four to represent BPA (I was one of them ^_^).
And guess who else was at the meeting? Turns out that the Secretary for the Chamber is also an accountant for Wendell Rec! When we got done presenting for BPA, the guy gestured to me and said something like "I remember this kid! He makes a very nice website!" to which my adviser agreed with saying "He has real talent, for sure."
Directly after the meeting, a councilman of City Hall came up to us out in the hall. He said that he knows BPA is looking for money and the city needs a website. My heart leaped as I raised my hand passionately.
Long story short, My adviser and the man would talk soon to discuss it all. After that, I would actually create the website the city of Wendell! The money I'd earn for that would go to fund Nationals if I qualify at State.
But man, to make a website for the actual city...Wow.
And if I'm lucky, I can stay on to manage that website too!
Talk about moving on up...
